To help students continue their practice of iconography between workshops, we are developing a few different options for continued study at home. These courses include a digital or hard copy sketch, color recipes, step-by-step instructions with digital photographs, and assistance and critique by email, phone or video chat, as needed, in order to complete the icon. The courses are not meant to replace in-person instruction, but to practice techniques learned in previous Prosopon workshops. Students use their own board and materials. To enroll in a course, please send a check for the indicated fee, with a signed course enrollment form, to the studio.

Garment Folds Study

Free

This study is meant to build the skill of seeing the forms of fabric folds with an iconographer’s eye and expressing them in a pencil drawing.

Knowing many of our students are following their local stay-at-home orders and many in-person workshops have been cancelled, we are offering this study at no charge. Keep your iconography skills in shape until we can meet again!

Please download the folder with instructions, photographs and videoclips here. Or send us an email and we will send you the folder directly.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

It goes without saying that the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is not an Orthodox Byzantine icon, but we have long admired it and found that some techniques and materials used in traditional iconography can be used effectively in copying the image. There are significantly fewer steps in this course as the first layer is largely a monochromatic value painting, therefore this course is recommended for those who have some experience in value painting and drawing.
